German supermarket chain Lidl have earmarked Tenby as a potential place to build a new store.

Working on expansion plans across the UK, the company has stated that it aims to aims to have 1,000 stores in the UK by 2022, and has listed the seaside resort as an option for a possible new build.

Ths chain which is appealing online for suitable sites ‘to continue its ‘phenomenal growth’ is also looking at potentially re-locating current stores in Milford Haven and Pembroke Dock.“Tenby is very much an area of interest to us, however we have not yet identified a suitable site,” commented Oliver Thomas from Lidl UK’s press office.Commenting on the matter, MP for Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire, Simon Hart, said: “Whether or not a well-known branch appears in Tenby is a matter for the council and planning authorities who will be responsible for granting or refusing planning consent.

“It will also be down to shoppers’ preferences, so if there is no demand, there will be no Lidl.

“Planners will also need to consider whether the application is bringing much-needed new jobs to the area,” he added.
