It’s out of the firebreaker and into the fire - in Pembrokeshire’s new premier pizzeria, Lava Pizza, where the state-of-the-art, standalone fire-and-stone oven is now burning daily and with no end in sight.

And why ’Lava’? Because, here, literally, the ‘floor is lava’! Walk into the modern, funky, restaurant, stepping out of the cool sea breeze blowing in from the Atlantic past the Saundersfoot Sands, and you are immediately struck by the red and orange lava-stained floor. Taken to your seats by the extraordinarily friendly team, guided to providing very attentive service, this is the pizza experience hitherto missing in the area. If Pembrokeshire is the jewel in Wales’ crown, then surely Lava Pizza is the ray of light that will keep catching your eye.

But what of the pizzas? This writer was not disappointed. Made, they say, "using the best of Italian and locally-sourced ingredients" and with "dough proofed for 24 hours", the pizzas I tried did not disappoint. Visibly being shaped and prepped by professional pizza chefs after being cooked at intense heat, the pizzas really are beautifully soft and light. And, yes, they did taste rather amazing - the Meat Feast pizza really hitting the spot.

With a takeaway service and bar serving spirits, draught beers and fine Italian wines, Lava Pizza is a great new addition to the local casual dining scene.
