The latest sporting event held in Tenby has been praised by the town’s Mayor, who said it was a great honour to welcome all the finishers over the line.
“I was delighted to be on the finishing lines for the Long Course Weekend, and welcome over the swimmers, cyclists and runners,” Clr. Laurence Blackhall told his colleagues at Tuesday night’s meeting of the town council.
“There was some fantastic feedback from competitors, talking about how welcoming the people of Tenby had been over the weekend, and I think they really appreciate that.
“Praise must go to the organisers, too, Activity Wales, and I think the banner which read ‘Tried Barcelona, tried Stockholm, Tenby is the best’ really sums up the event.
“One man from Belgium who crashed over the marathon line said how he was going to go back to his home and tell everyone how fantastic Tenby is, but that even the swim has hills!” laughed Clr. Blackhall.
Despite the praise for the event, Clr. Will Rossiter said he felt he had to point out that there had been a number of complaints again this year about the loud speaker system in Tudor Square, which ran from 6 am on Saturday.
“It is far too loud in the centre of Tenby, and I had the same complaints last year, so something should be done about it.” he commented.
“There was even someone on a microphone down the harbour just yelping at one point. They shouldn’t be put on a mic if they don’t know how to use it properly!” added Clr. Rossiter.
The town clerk also confirmed that there had been a number of complaints raised to the town council offices about the loudness of the speaker system in Tudor Square, and that Pembrokeshire County Council had asked for feedback to be given on the event.
“I recognise that there may be some inconvenience to some people and understand their complaints, but the likes of the Long Course Weekend and Ironman Wales happen twice a year in the town, and are stunning events that put Tenby on the map,” said Clr. Blackhall.
“The event organisers are very professional and I’m sure if feedback is passed on then they might be able to make some adjustments to the sound levels.
“Overall it was a fantastic weekend once again and a credit to Tenby,” he added.
