Last Friday at Tenby and District Arts Club, Alison Neil gave a performance of her one-woman play, Larks and Magic. This told the life of E. Nesbit, credited as the first modern writer for children.
Although due to the corona virus, there was only a small audience, Alison’s performance was impeccable, and somehow made you feel as if you were transported to the late Victorian era even while sitting in Church House, Tenby.
E. Nesbit was part of the Bohemian set in London at the end of the 19th century, and her domestic arrangements would still raise a few eyebrows today.
It seems that there was more going on behind closed doors than ever came out in public… We heard many famous names from the period, all of whom Edith knew personally.
Alison is truly a multi-talented performer, researching and writing the plays herself, setting up her own stage sets, lights and sound to make a truly mesmerising performance.
The chance of an informal question and answer session afterwards was another cause of fascination, finding out details of how such a performance slowly comes together.
Unfortunately, again due to the corona virus, the final item on the Tenby Arts Club programme for the season has had to be cancelled. There will be no performance this (Friday) evening by Bella Voce; indeed there will be no meeting at all.
The AGM has also been postponed until the beginning of next season; details will follow in September.
The Arts Club is at present hoping to continue with the summer coffee morning and painting exhibition, and again, details will follow. For now, thanks to everyone who contributed to or supported this year’s successful season, and good health to all over the coming weeks.
