The Lamphey Local History Group met on Tuesday evening to hear a very interesting talk on Pembroke Dock by Martin Caveney.
Living so close to Pembroke Dock, it seems we have been guilty of taking this unique town for granted. England has the garden cities which were built 'off the drawing board', but no other town in Wales can date its beginnings in exactly the same way as Pembroke Dock.
This is the bi-centenary and we should all be aware of this. Anyone who takes the trouble to walk round the town will see rows of very fine houses which give a clue to its prosperous past. During the last war it was the only place to have bases for all three services.
There is a lovely community spirit in the town and any events planned are usually well supported.
Martin outlined plans for the coming year, and we have to hope for a repeat of last summer's fine weather. Those of us who went to school in this area all agreed that no mention was ever made of this history on our doorstep.
Our chairman brought in plans for the History Group for the coming year. We have a full programme of talks and outings. We meet on the second Tuesday of every month in the church hall at 7.30 pm. Please note this is not the village hall. Church hall is opposite the church, close to the railway bridge.
