In a town with a strong naval history like Pembroke Dock, you would expect to hear the nautical term 'cast off!' used in connection with some of its bicentenary celebrations.
Since the start of December, an enthusiastic group of knitters, some from as far afield as Fishguard, have been busy with a different type of 'casting on and off' to create a colourful collection of knitted bunting to decorate the town's business premises during its bicentenary.
The idea for knitted bunting started as a joke between the two organisers, Paddy Pratt and Gill Springett, but the bunting soon increased and a peep at the mountain of bunting, colourful strips and mini hats in Paddy's spare bedroom shows how supportive and creative the army of local knitters have been.
Some of the groups taking part have included Knit and Natter in Milford Haven, led by Mrs. Joan Flowers, volunteers at the Sunderland Museum Coffee Shop, Holyland Residential Home, Ashdale Residential Home, the Day Centre and Sunderland Ward at South Pembs. Hospital.
The two ladies would like to thank all involved; they don't know how many knitters have taken part, as some of the bunting has been donated anonymously, but they have been overwhelmed by the response.
If you would like to 'cast on' to knit bunting for the bicentenary, Paddy and Gill will be happy to give you a pattern.
They are also looking for volunteers to help string the bunting before April 26.
