Pembrokeshire has around 3,700 people on the coronavirus shielding list with help available via the local authority if required.
Pembrokeshire County Council sent letters to all those on the sheltered or shielding list – meaning they have existing health conditions putting them at greater risk of Covid-19 and are advised not to leave their homes – but not all have been spoken too.
Head of infrastructure Darren Thomas said that the people would be written to again and he reminded them that support was available through the council’s Community Hub.
Mr Thomas said the council wanted to follow up on all those that had received a shielding letter but it was not always possible to have everyone’s contact numbers so he urged them to get in touch.
“We are doing everything we can to support them but we also recognise that there are people in the community that haven’t had a shielding letter but are perhaps vulnerable and the services are available for them as well.
“If anybody out there needs any help, some might be resistant or reluctant, the offer of help is there. We can contact people and look at how we help people,” he added.
Help is available for essential tasks such as shopping, collecting medication or other supplies, as well as access to a friendly voice on the other end of the phone.
Head of environment and civil contingencies Richard Brown added that the “council can’t take credit” for the success of the hub, it was down to the “hard work of members of social care and wider, such as all the groups within the communities themselves.
“People have been working hard pulling these things together, really motivated people in the communities. We have been a success because people have all pulled in the same direction,” he said.
Mr Brown added that if it were possible to retain the hub in the future, keeping the “energy and enthusiasm” would be a huge benefit to the county and could be the “silver lining” of this period.
