STAY safe this winter with essential health advice for asthma and lung conditions in Wales. Cold air can aggravate symptoms, increasing risks for those affected.
Joseph Carter, Head of Asthma + Lung UK Cymru said:
“Temperatures have dropped across Wales, so we are urging people to be aware that cold air is a dangerous trigger for people with lung conditions like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It can irritate the airways and makes symptoms like wheezing, coughing and breathlessness worse. This can increase the risk of needing emergency hospital care.
“During a cold snap it is important to continue taking your medication as prescribed and to keep your reliever inhaler with you. If you need to go out, several thin layers will keep you warmer than one thick layer, and you should keep your head, hands and feet warm with a hat, gloves and extra pair of socks Also, make sure your home is heated to 18°C and you eat at least one hot meal a day.
“If you feel the cold weather is making your symptoms much worse, make an urgent appointment with your GP or nurse. You can call our dedicated helpline (open 9am-5pm weekdays) on 0300 222 5800.”
