Sir,

I read with sadness a few weeks ago about the closure of the T.P. Hughes High Street store. The name has been synonymous with Tenby in my family for as long as I can remember.

When we lived near Tenby, my mother often visited that shop. I was told many years ago that when I was a child (prior to school age), if she wanted a quiet hour or so to select some special item, she would go to TP’s and take me with her. She knew some of the lady assistants and I would be left with one of them and I would sit quietly on a chair.

Apparently I was fascinated by the system of overhead wires on the ground floor and the vacuum tubes upstairs by which money was moved from the counter to the cashier.

Ah! Happy days.

Max Jenkins,
