Cooking
up a meal
Following on from the very successful Cooking Bus visit in May, pupils from Year 6 at Golden Grove School have been putting their skills to the test.
As a part of the school's after-hours activity, the pupils have been choosing and then delivering tasty and nutritious food in under an hour.
At the beginning of the sessions, the pupils chose to look at making starters, main course and dessert dishes. The first session, led by teacher Mrs. Wilkinson, concentrated on safety, knife skills and hygiene.
The starter chosen was a quick and easy leek and potato soup. Cutting, peeling and chopping the ingredients was undertaken by the pupils following which a blender was used to finish the soup. First to taste it were the pupils and having met with their approval a sample was presented the head Mr. Johnson. A double portion was also given to the school cook who passed it as a very good dish.
The main course dish was a pasta bolognese. The pupils made sure that there was a portion for the head to taste and he gave it a very high rating for taste.
Dessert will be a crumble made from harvested black berries and apples. The sessions aim to increase the pupils' awareness of healthy living and essential cooking skills. Such has been the success of the sessions that several of the pupils have tried out their acquired skills at home.
Headteacher Mr. Les Johnson said: " I am delighted that the pupils are enjoying the cookery sessions, the samples of the meals produced were delicious. The sessions run are providing useful life skills for the pupils."
