A splashing good time was had by 22 pupils from Year 6 of Golden Grove School-Ysgol Gelli Aur last week.
The pupils spent five days on a residential experience at The Pembroke Activity Center, The Prince's Trust Center on Cleddau Reach in Pembroke Dock.
Under the careful eye of experienced outdoor pursuits instructors the teams of pupils undertook raft building, climbing on the very challenging climbing wall, canoeing, coasteering and kayaking.
There was also a chance for them to put their map reading and problem solving skills to good use on an orienteering course. With many of the activities taking place off-site, it was also a good chance for the pupils to gain a sense of place with visits to Stackpole Quay, Bosherston Ponds, Barafundle and other coastal places. The activities undertaken were designed to give the pupils a chance to build their skills in self-reliance, reliance on others, communication and team building.
The Pembroke Activity Centre is an ideal location, being purpose-built and self-sufficient. The pupils were roomed in the houses that form a part of the centre and were at all times under the supervision of school staff and Prince's Trust staff.
The catering staff ensured that a hearty breakfast was available for the start of each day and an energy replacing supper at the end, the pupils would like to thank these staff for keeping them well fed!
Headteacher Les Johnson said: "We have a long association with The Pembroke Activity Centre and the many pupils who have attended there over the years have gained immensely. I would like to thank the Prince's Trust for the very good work they do. I would also like to thank my staff for their commitment in supervising the pupils over the week."
