There was a large gathering of parents and families at Golden Grove School-Ysgol Gelli Aur for the annual Foundation Phase pupils sports day. The early threat of showers faded and the sports field was soon a scene of pupils in their classes enjoying the competitions. Running races were very competitive with some pupils showing good skills, runners were cheered on by their classmates and family members. First to third placed finishers were awarded sticker for their efforts. The much loved sack race was a scene of tumbles and flying leaps. Thumping and jumping their was done the course the pupils took it all in their stride. There were some serious faces in the egg and spoon face,concentration was the name of the game and many an egg fell on to the floor from where they were quickly retrieved. With what appeared to be left overs from a festival, the boys and girls enjoyed a one-legged wellie race which provided much amusement for the onlookers. The finale was the obstacle race where pupils negotiated hoops and other like challenges to deal with on their way to the finishing line. The looks on the faces of the pupils said it all, a great couple of hours of fun and a wonderfully supportive crowd. Head teacher Les Johnson said: "This always a popular event, I am grateful to the parents for their enthusiastic support."
Two years hard work have paid off for a Pembroke teaching assistant, Rebecca Smith. Rebecca, who has been working at Golden Grove School in Pembroke has recently graduated in inclusive studies for teaching assistants with a merit. She is now going on to work towards her BA in social inclusion. A very proud Rebecca recently attended an awards ceremony, complete with her mortar board and gown, where she received her degree scroll. Describing her graduation, she said: "I have put in a great deal of work to achieve this qualification, it would not have been possible to get the award without the fantastic support I had from the staff at Golden Grove." Head teacher Mr. Les Johnson said: "Rebecca has done extremely well, and is rightly proud of her achievement, we wish her all the best in her continuing studies."
