Pupils from Class 4 of Golden Grove-Gelli Aur were on expedition recently with a visit to Skomer Island. Twenty-five pupils under the watchful eye of class teacher Miss Watton and other staff made their journey over to the island on The Dale Princess out of Martins Haven. On reaching the island and climbing the 87 steps, the pupils were greeted by assistant warden Jason who gave an overview of the history and wildlife of the island. He impressed the need to 'stay on the path' so as not to damage or injure any of the many thousand of birds living in burrows. So, keeping to the paths the pupils went via Captain Kites towards the South Valley and High Cliff. Stopping at High Cliff, they were in awe at the site and sounds of hundred of bird of different species crammed on to the narrow sea cliff ledges. With more birds on the sea, it was a magnificent sight. Mimicking the call of the resident Kittiwakes, the group made there way to The Wick, famous for the Puffins and other birds. The Puffins were somewhat thin on the ground but following a quick chat with one of the volunteer wardens the pupils were pleased to learn that the birds were out at sea feeding up before their arduous task of raising their chicks which were to be hatched in the coming weeks. Moving on toward the old farm, the pupils crossed Morey Mere which was a blaze of both Bluebells and Pink Campion. A grazing rabbit attracted their attention, before arriving at the farm where lunch was eagerly taken. After lunch, the group was split in to smaller units to explore different parts of the island. Meeting up again at the farm, it was time to make for the embarkation point in North Haven and a boat ride back to the mainland. North Haven was as ever busy with Razor Bill and Puffins going about their routines, a good chance to see a real life Reggie (emblem of Pembrokeshire Coast National Park) as one pupil put it. A good and varied list of wildlife seen was made. The pupils had a fantastic day out on the island and wish to thank Dale Sailing, Jason and Ed from the island and the volunteer wardens.
