A Pembroke nursing home has staged its very own version of the Olympics to celebrate the 2012 event.

Ashdale Nursing Home even adopted the motto 'Only long-lived youngsters may participate in our crazy sports' for the games.

The opening ceremony was held on Friday, July 27, and Ashdale's celebrated resident, Ellen Evans, aged 100, cut the ribbon to start the games.

Ellen commented that this year she would not be taking part, allowing others to win!

Events were held throughout the week and included - skittles, six-legged race, boat race, toss the caber, snakes and ladders, welly wanging, horse racing and snail racing.

All the residents were involved in the events, not only taking part, but in supporting and encouraging 'Team Ashdale', and all received a certificate for participating.

On Monday, Pembroke's lady Mayoress, Mel Philips, kindly presented the gold, silver and bronze medals and certificates at an 'Awards Ceremony'.

The overall winners for their 'Outstanding Efforts' were - Dai Turner, Megan Evans and Ilsa Wise.

The ladies and gentlemen of Ashdale expressed their enjoyment of their own Olympics, saying "Age is no barrier to sport."

Dorothy, aged 104, would like to be included in the next Olympics, Gwen, 84, liked all the events, especially the running, Betty, 78, thought the welly wanging and tossing the caber were wonderful, and threw her wellie out of the arena, through the doorway, to win her gold medal!

The Mayoress expressed her delight at the amount of enjoyment, enthusiasm and participation available to the ladies and gentlemen at Ashdale.

The individual winners were: Event - skittles: Ilsa (gold), Dai (silver), Mavis (bronze); six-legged race: Jack (gold), Megan (silver), Muriel (bronze); boat race: Dai (gold), Lavinia (silver), Doris (bronze); toss the caber: Dai (gold), Jack (silver), Megan (bronze); snakes and ladders: Betty (gold), Jack (silver), Ilsa (bronze); welly wanging: Betty (gold), Dai (silver), John (bronze); horse racing: Gwen (gold), Mavis (silver), Megan (bronze); snail race: Lavinia (gold), Olwyn (silver), Trevor (bronze).
