Many locals have been busy fundraising for the BBC Children in Need appeal; one of them is George MacCreath, who is again raising money for this amazing charity that is so important to him.
George is 23 and lives in Redberth near Tenby. He is an incredible young man with epilepsy, additional needs and a heart of gold. Children in need is George’s favourite charity.
George, a former head boy of Portfield School in Haverfordwest, loves watching Children in Need and the real life stories that encourage people to raise lots of money to make their lives better. Last year, he wanted to do something to help. So that was the start of The George 5.
When the Children in Need appeal came around this year, George was again keen to support the charity and raise money to help children who may be ill and in hospital, or those who have lost their mum or dad or need support because they feel sad.
George has raised money through his JustGiving page, also by taking his Pudsey collecting money pot to all the places he visits. Alongside this are donations from family and friends. Last year George raised over £800 and he is well on the way to topping last year’s total.
George has again undertaken five challenges. All of them push his skills and strengths to the limit as he has complex special needs including Autism and epilepsy.
With his carer he has:
- Followed the instructions reading them himself and made a Lego model under pressure to complete in a set time.
- Played darts (three times round the clock) in one hour including the bull - in a draughty, cold shed.
- Read a recipe himself, measured, weighed and made a chocolate cake after buying the ingredients himself.
- Walked down and up the 133 steps (nicknamed jelly leg steps)in Tenby. The steepest route to get onto Tenby North Beach.
- Walked for three kilometers around Scolton Manor, reading and following a map.
He realises that everyone is struggling with the cost of living and has set his target on raising £100 this year. He will be so excited and grateful for every penny that people donate.
George has had many seizures over the last year, falling and breaking his television and ipad besides giving himself black eyes and many bruises. He needs someone with him all the time because of the autism and complex needs so none of this would have been possible without the care and support from his PA Julia Mills.
Julia, who completed the challenges with him said: “Yes, we’ve got jelly legs! I am so proud of him and his amazing efforts.”
