A yacht, drifting off the entrance to the Milford Haven Waterway after her rudder jammed, was escorted to safety by RNLI Angle's all-weather lifeboat last week.

The Tamar class lifeboat Mark Mason was launched at 9.47pm on Wednesday (August 1) to a mayday from the yacht, which had six persons on board and was off St. Anne's Head.

As the lifeboat arrived on the scene. the yacht reported her rudder was free, she was able to use her engine and her skipper agreed to downgrade from a mayday situation.

The yacht was then escorted into the Waterway to the pontoon at Dale. Once the casualty was safely alongside, the lifeboat returned to her station, with the volunteer crew returning to their homes at 11.40 pm.

It was the fourth call-out in seven days for the station's lifeboats. The previous day the D-class inshore lifeboat Richard John Talbot Hillier was launched at 1.20 pm after a phone call to the station from a concerned member of the public.

The station's Land Rover was sent to Angle Point to investigate the report of a yacht adrift being assisted by a person wading.

The lifeboat was launched to ensure the safety of the person in the water, while another boat secured the yacht to a mooring. The man who had assisted the yacht had made his way safely ashore, and the lifeboat returned to her station.

The previous Friday, the all-weather lifeboat launched at 4.07 pm, at the request of Milford Haven Coastguard, to four divers drifting away from their dive boat, which had fouled her anchor in Jack Sound. Another two divers were in the water trying to cut the boat free.

RNLI Little and Broad Haven's inshore lifeboat was also tasked to the scene.

Angle lifeboat had just passed St. Ann' Head when the report came through that the situation was resolved, with the dive boat successfully released and all six divers recovered.

The Police RIB M33 was on the scene and agreed to escort the dive boat back to Gelliswick, Milford Haven, with both Little Haven and Angle lifeboats released to return to their stations.

On the Wednesday (July 25), Angle's inshore lifeboat launched at 6.34 pm, at the request of Milford Haven Coastguard, to a motor boat aground at Sawdern Point, 0.8 miles east of the lifeboat station.

The boat had run aground on the falling tide and was due to start to float soon after the inshore lifeboat was launched. After an initial inspection to ensure the boat's hull was intact, the vessel was towed clear by the lifeboat as the tide came in.

The motor boat's skipper did machinery checks and was happy to continue his journey home without further assistance. The lifeboat returned to her station and was back on the slip by 7.40 pm.
