A family from Cardiff tried to evade two policing teams to access a holiday let in Freshwater East road traffic officers have revealed.
The incident happened on Wednesday as police patrols of rural coastline roads, beauty spots and car parks were underway - and despite Pembrokeshire Road Policing Units stating on social media that there was ‘very little traffic’ on the roads, and thanking people for adhering to the guidelines, one family flouted the rules and travelled to try and take a holiday in Pembrokeshire. When stopped by police near Carmarthen, the family told officers their caravan had developed a leak.Officers saw the car was packed with clothes and other belongings suggesting intentions for a long-term stay. They explained the current regulations around essential travel, and encouraged the driver to turn around and head home. But just half an hour later their vehicle was spotted again near Freshwater East beach in Pembrokeshire.“Despite Carmarthenshire Road Policing Unit colleagues stopping this car previously and directing it to turn around, the occupants sought to find an alternate way in to Pembrokeshire,” stated the Pembrokeshire team on Twitter.
The occupants were issued with Fixed Penalty Notices and escorted out of the force.Inspector Andrew Williams said it was not acceptable for people to ignore police advice.“We have been working hard over the last three weeks to engage with potential visitors and explain that holidays to Pembrokeshire – or anywhere else – are not allowed at present,” he said.“It beggars belief that - despite daily coverage of the coronavirus crisis and the dangers it presents to people’s lives - some people are still acting in such a selfish and irresponsible way.”
