Families showed support for reducing children's exposure to second-hand smoke in cars when the Fresh Start Wales Communities First tour visited Pembroke Dock last week.

People enjoyed a fun-filled day out at St. Patrick's Community Hall with the Fresh Start team who put on a host of activities to help parents and children alike learn about keeping cars smoke-free.

Parents tested the carbon monoxide levels in their body, found out about their lung capacity and received advice and information on where to get help to kick the habit.

Children also learned about the smoke-free message through playing games with Fresh Start mascot Patch the dragon and picking up Fresh Start Frisbees to take home.

Evidence-based research shows that children who breathe in second-hand cigarette smoke have an increased risk of developing respiratory infections, middle ear disease and asthma.

It has also indicated that second-hand smoke can lead to serious illnesses such as meningitis and babies face an increased risk of cot death.

Almost all of the cigarette smoke is invisible and doesn't have a smell, so parents who smoke in their cars can be exposing their children to harm without realising it.

It can even linger in the atmosphere for up to two hours after a cigarette is extinguished, and can be absorbed into the seat lining and carpets of family cars.
