The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority is urging members of the public to avoid lighting fires and take great care with barbecues, following a number of grass fires in the county over recent days.

Staff from the Authority have now erected signs in key locations, warning of fire risks.

Park Authority Ranger and part-time Firefighter Richard Vaughan said: “We are urging everyone to exercise the utmost caution during this period of dry and hot weather and be aware of the heightened risk of grass fires.

“If you are planning a barbecue, you must ensure that the barbecue is placed on a flat, non-combustible service, well away from trees, shrubs and other combustible material. It’s also essential that barbecues are extinguished with cold water and that all rubbish is disposed of properly.

“With more people set to enjoy Pembrokeshire’s fabulous scenery over the coming weeks, it’s important to remember that in hot and dry conditions like this, even a discarded cigarette or glass bottle can start a devastating fire.”
