WHAT has hemp got to do with the Welsh economy and Senedd elections? On Sunday April 26, HaverHub Depot is hosting Hemp Hustings, a lively evening that challenges candidates to think differently about the future of Pembrokeshire.
What happens when local politics meets one of the most versatile crops on the planet? With the Senedd elections taking place on Thursday, May 7, this is your chance to hear how local candidates see hemp fitting into the economic and environmental future of Wales.
Right now, Pembrokeshire farmers are already growing hemp, but much of it is transported to England to be processed into sustainable building materials. Hemp can also be used for textiles, insulation, biodegradable products and much more. The potential is enormous, and this night has been set aside to explore exactly how this remarkable crop could help regenerate our local economy.
“You’ve heard of Net Zero. Now we’re talking Hemp Zero,” said a spokesperson for Hemp Cymru.
“Our aim is simple: educate, entertain and spark conversation. We want to bring our community together to explore the possibilities of hemp and ask our local candidates how they plan to support this emerging industry. With the right infrastructure here in Pembrokeshire, hemp could create new opportunities for farmers, support local businesses, and position Wales as a leader in sustainable materials and green innovation.
“This is about more than just a plant — it’s about jobs, sustainability, and a resilient local economy.
“Wales grew hemp to build its churches. It can grow hemp to build its future.”
Could hemp be Pembrokeshire’s golden opportunity?
