TONY Jacobs and Jim Barry made a return visit to Tenby Arts Club, after a gap of some years. They were well-worth waiting for.
At Friday’s meeting, Tony and Barry performed songs from the 1930s and 40s by Gershwin, Cole Porter and other great songwriters of that era. The audience (mostly of a certain age) found that they knew nearly every song, and could join in with the choruses at least, if not with the whole song.
Tony also played the trumpet and paid homage to the great Eddie Calvert by playing Georgia and especially dedicating it to Anna Davies who was in the audience and who is a great fan of Tony and Jim.
There were numerous interesting and amusing anecdotes including the fact that Cole Porter’s When they begin the Beguine was originally the ‘B’ side of The Indian Love Call but went on to become much more popular and well-known.
When they performed The Ugly Duckling you would have sworn that Danny Kaye himself was in the room. The whole evening was an extremely accomplished performance by both singer and pianist and deserved to be heard by a much larger audience. Unfortunately there were several other events being held in Tenby at the same time.
This Friday, November 25, St Mary’s Church Tenby Handbell Ringers will be entertaining members and visitors at 6pm in St Johns Church Hall in Warren Street. All are welcome. The small entry charge includes tea, coffee and biscuits and there is a members’ discount.
