THE latest Tenby Jazz Lunch at The Clarence featured the educated, ethereal sounds of the Messore Thorne Jones trio.
The band - comprising Dan Messore on guitar, Aidan Thorne on double bass, and Gethin Jones on drums - were students together at the Welsh School of Music; individually they play with a range of different bands, even different types of music, but savour the opportunities when they can play together as a simple jazz trio. And this concert revealed their true mutual love of this genre.
Based on standards such as Stella by Starlight, Seven Steps to Heaven and Rhythm Changes – just three of their first four numbers – their respect of the original songs yet their immaculately ‘velvet’ touches drew the audience ever onto their special stage. Their later numbers, including Blue Daniel, My Funny Valentine and the two final numbers, Milestones then Juggling With Symphony Sid, set up an aura which enveloped just everyone there. Just great music!
Since relaunching at the Clarence House Hotel last April, Tenby Jazz has hosted the Dave Cottle / Gary Phillips Trio, the virtuosic and eclectic Afternoon in Paris, and the contemporary, melodic Dave Jones Quartet. Next was the popular Dick Hamer Quartet, featuring vocalist Jenny Jones, and then The Groucho Club, with their own funk take on diverse jazz greats. Cardiff’s Ross Hicks Trio has also performed there, along with Welsh gypsy jazz group Llandjango and The Coltrane Dedication.
Each of these great performances was complemented by a delightful Sunday lunch at the Clarence.
Tenby Jazz will now take a long summer break, returning on October 18 with Dixieland jazz from the Vic Partridge Band. Meanwhile, the message from the organisers is: “Please support live music and, of course, especially live jazz whenever and wherever you can.”
