Presented by Narberth Jazz, a triumphant climax to the Eddie Gripper Trio’s UK tour was completed on April 11 at the Plas Hotel.

The musicians who made up the trio were:

Eddie Gripper – Eddie Gripper is a rising star as a pianist and composer known for his remarkable maturity and versatility. His debut album, ‘Home’, released in March 2023, received critical acclaim and drew comparisons to jazz greats. Gripper’s intelligent compositions and accomplished instrumental skills have garnered attention from both critics and fellow musicians.

Ursula Harrison (double bass) – Ursula is an integral part of the trio, contributing to their rich and dynamic sound. Her bass lines provide a solid foundation, allowing the group to explore various musical landscapes.

Patrick Barrett-Donlon (drums) – Patrick’s rhythmic prowess adds depth and energy to the trio’s performances. His drumming complements Gripper’s compositions, creating a cohesive and engaging musical experience.

Gordon Barry writes: The three superb musicians enchanted the Plas audience with a playlist from the album which was interspersed with a number of Jazz standards. Composer Eddie’s considered and contemplative compositions belie his youthful persona. Written during lockdown, the metrically challenging grooves are paired with rich, elegant harmonies, culminating in an outcome that is both provocative and gratifying. Each piece is a journey through time and space – beginning and finishing at a familiar and comforting destination before moving onto new or subtly developed ideas.

Next month’s Narberth Jazz event at the Plas Hotel will feature a brilliant Welsh guitarist, James Chadwick, together with favourite local hero on tenor sax, Dom Norcross.

James is the leader of The J4 quartet who have toured Wales playing the music of the Beatles with a jazz twist. However, for May 16 he will be backed by Aidan Thorne on bass and Gethin Jones on drums to accompany Dom on saxophone.

James is also involved in educational projects and Jazz Explorers (the new name for Jazz Cymru). This will be a great evening’s entertainment.

Tickets are available at the door or online from www.narberthjazz.wales.
