It might be back to school soon but that doesn’t mean that summer fun is over.

Ty Hafan Fun Day 2022
(Ty Hafan)

Tŷ Hafan’s annual Family Fun Day will now take place on Saturday, September 9 and promises to be a great day out, having had to be postponed from its original date in July because of unseasonally high winds and driving rain.

Activities will run between 12 noon and 5pm in the beautiful grounds of Tŷ Hafan’s  hospice on Hayes Road, CF64 5XX with the day kindly sponsored by Cabot.

Attractions will include:

  • Vintage cars and supercars
  • Live music
  • Hog roasts, fish and chips, paninis and more food vendors
  • Crafts stalls, jewellery, clothes and cake stalls
  • Free games and activities
  • Mini gym competition

In addition, tours of Tŷ Hafan’s hospice building are expected to be available on the day, depending on circumstances.

Visitors who get the chance to be shown around the hospice will get an opportunity to see where funds raised for the charity go: straight to the essential services Tŷ Hafan provides for children with life-shortening conditions and their families.

James Davies-Hale, Head of Fundraising, said:“It costs £5.2 million a year for Tŷ Hafan to provide vital care and support for children with life-shortening conditions and their families in our hospice and in homes and communities across Wales and less than 20% comes from statutory sources. In other words, without the amazing kindness, enterprise and generosity of the Welsh public we simply would not be able to do what we do.

“So whatever else people have planned for early September, I’d encourage as many of them as possible to come down to Tŷ Hafan on Saturday September 9 for what promises to be a fantastic day out and all the while you’ll be helping some of the most vulnerable children in Wales in the process.”

Tŷ Hafan is a hospice supporting around 274 children with life-shortening conditions and their families a year, providing specialist palliative care addressing the physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs of each member of the family. From diagnosis to bereavement, Tŷ Hafan is there for the family as long as they need it.

The majority of Tŷ Hafan’s work is about “quality of life” rather than “end of life”. It is focused on “making a short life a full life”.

Tŷ Hafan offers families end-of-life care, and services such as family support, complementary therapy, music therapy and outreach play both within the hospice and in the family home.

A child and his/her family can be referred to Tŷ Hafan at the time of diagnosis with care and support being provided throughout the course of the child’s condition, which can be for many years.

The children and young people who access Tŷ Hafan’s services suffer from a broad range of conditions, many with profound and complex medical needs. Some of the conditions are so rare they haven’t been named.

It costs around £5.2 million every year (circa £14,500 a day) to provide Tŷ Hafan’s care services to children and young people with life-limiting conditions and their families, at our hospice in Sully (near Cardiff) and in homes and community settings across Wales.

Around 80% of Tŷ Hafan’s care costs are generated by donations from the generous public in Wales and beyond, via a range of fundraising activities - including community and corporate events, legacies, and, its commercial activities such as its lottery and shops. The remainder of Tŷ Hafan’s care costs are received via statutory sources in Wales.
