Green Tomatoes

These are slowly ripening, there are some nice ones in the community edible garden at the moment, but they are still quite green. Hopefully they will ripen soon, but if you are left with any green tomatoes, here are some ideas. They are great fried as they hold their shape better in the hot oil. They pickle well, and actually make great jam or chutney. You can make green tomato soup or green sauce. If you make bread, green tomatoes are a good addition to this. You can air fry green tomato slices so that they are crisp on the outside and soft in the middle – they are nice coated in parmesan cheese too.

Tenby Community Learning Centre Classes

The new academic year starts soon, with classes starting from September 26. Choose from Have fun singing, creative writing, willow basketry, watercolour painting, stained glass, medieval history, yoga, chair yoga, French, Italian, digital skills, using your tablet, Welsh, and Essential skills (brush up your English and Maths skills). These are in Tenby, and there are other classes in Pembroke Dock and Narberth. Something for everyone! Contact Jo on 01437 770190 for more information or to book a class.

Identify five flowing grasses

There are loads of different types of grass, once you start looking you will see different ones all over the place. They come in single stems or little clumps, in different colours and textures, and have different types of seeds. They are fabulous for wildlife, and can be pretty too. They pop up in unexpected places like pavement cracks, edges of playground and carparks. Even in quite a short lawn, you can find several different types of grass. Try and identify them – you will probably need the internet or a guide book to help as there are so many!

Great Big Green Week

This is from September 24 to October 2. So far, a litter pick is arranged, meeting at Tenby Railway Station at 1pm on Thursday, September 29. Everyone is welcome! There are plans for a craft session on the Tuesday afternoon, does anyone have any good ideas for green recycled crafts to do? Any other suggestions for events and activities to hold during this week are welcome – contact me on [email protected] or 07811359686 or pop in to the Town Council Office in the De Valence on Upper Frog Street for a chat.

Pen and Pencil Holder

This may be useful for someone now that school and evening classes are restarting. Take a baked bean tin – or a similar sized tin. Clean it well and leave it to dry. Find some bright coloured string or wool. Cover the top inch or so of the can with PVA (school) glue and wind the string or wool carefully round the can row by row, making sure each row is tight up against the row above. You keep adding a strip of glue and winding round the can until it is fully covered. You can change the colour if you want, and you could experiment with different patterns to see which you like best. You can use it as it is, or stick a piece of felt on to the bottom of the can so it doesn’t rub a surface.

Green Infrastructure Plan for Tenby

The County Council has just opened a consultation about their plans for increasing the green areas in and around all the towns in Pembrokeshire, and would like suggestions of ways to add more that they haven’t thought of as well as comments on their plans so far. You can see the plans online, and the map for Tenby is on display in the glass fronted noticeboard in the De Valence. It includes planting on the walls of the multi-storey, pollinator gardens on Castle Hill, St Mary’s Church grounds, and along the Town Wall, and lots of other things. Give then your views on https://pembrokeshire-green-infrastructure-strategy-eng-luc.hub.arcgis.com/ or drop your thoughts in to the Town Council office and we will pass them on.

Fun Palace

Fun Palaces aim to share and celebrate the genius in everyone. They encourage people to share their skills with each other – everyone has a skill in something, whether it is sewing on a button, making a pom pom, fixing a bike, cooking, painting, identifying fossils, whatever! Tenby will have a Fun Palace in Augustus Place Community Hall on Saturday, October 1 from 1pm to 4.30pm and skill sharers are needed – in any skill that can be shared in Augustus Place. People are needed to come along on the day to try the skills too!

Pick a Pocket Park Scheme

Tenby Town Council, in collaboration with Pembrokeshire County Council, are looking for people who would like to look after a little bit of public garden near them, particularly the bits that could do with a little tender loving care. If there is a tiny patch near you that you would be interested in, get in touch, we can have a chat about it, see what needs doing to get you started off, and make a plan.
