Tenby Arts Club Painting Exhibition
This is on for the next two weeks in St Johns Church Hall, Warren Street, Tenby. The paintings are all by Arts Club members, and come in a wondrous variety. They are almost all for sale at very reasonable prices, come along and have a look.
St Swithin’s Day
This is today, and there is a rhyme to go with it – “St Swithin’s Day if thou dost rain, for forty days it will remain. St Swithin’s Day if thou be fair, for forty days twill rain nae mair.” This is apparently because St Swithin, Bishop of Winchester, wanted to be buried outside, and was, but 100 years later in 971 AD the new bishop moved him indoors and there was a terrible storm for 40 days. Keep a note of the weather for the next 40 days and see what happens this year – maybe St Swithin has finally got over being moved indoors!
Poetry in the Park
The July gathering of poets and people who enjoy listening to and maybe sharing some poetry is on Sunday, July 17 at 3pm in the Edible Community Garden on Sutton St. Everyone is welcome, bring one or two poems to share if you would like to, otherwise just come along to enjoy the very varied poetry brought along by others.
World Ice Cream Day
This is also on Sunday, July 17, and is a great excuse for having some! Did you know that the Persian Empire was known to put snow in a bowl, pour concentrated grape juice over it, and eat it as a treat thousands of years ago? They would climb to mountain tops and harvest the snow from their peaks in the summertime. They would then keep the snow in underground chambers, known as a yachal, to keep it cold from the earth. Around 697 AD, the Chinese in the Tang Dynasty took to freezing dairy with salt and ice. Although the invention of ice cream dates thousands of years back, many culinary businesses give credit to Antonio Latini from Naples, Italy, who created a milk-based sorbet in the 17th century.
Today there are lots of flavours available to try -what is your favourite? The Co-op likes members to send in suggestions for new flavours, and every year they choose one to actually make. This year it is Raspberry Pavlova ice cream. If you could design a new ice cream flavour, what would it be?
Why not put a scoop of ice cream in a lemonade or coke for an ice cream float?
Tenby Food Hub
This is a way to buy a mixed bag of any or all of vegetables, salad or fruit. Each is £5. You need to go to the Old Chapel in Lower Frog Street, Tenby by 3pm on Tuesday, July 19 with the cash. There is an order form and an envelope on the table at the back, along with a box to post your order into. It will be delivered by Four Seasons to the Old Chapel on Friday, July 29 and you can come and pick it up from 11am that Friday to 4pm on Saturday, July 30. You can also put your order in for the next fortnight at the same time, or at least by that Tuesday, Aug 2. And so it goes on. This is open to everyone, and hopefully will be especially useful now as the greengrocer is not reopening.
Natural Fans
If the weather gets hot, you could experiment with different leaves to find which one makes the best natural fan. Fern leaves would be quite good with all their fronds, or maybe a big maple leaf? In India they used big fern or palm leaves rigged up with a piece of string and it was the job of the punkha wallah to sit pulling the string regularly to keep the room cool! Perhaps you could take turns to be the punkha wallah for each other on a hot day…
Carnival Costume Making Workshop
The Fireman’s Carnival is on Wednesday, August 3 this year, and it would be great to support them by having as many entries as possible. Everyone can join in, as you can be a ‘walking’ entry so you don’t necessarily need to be part of a float entry.
If you would like to come along to Augustus Place Community Hall on Saturday, July 23 from 2 to 5pm, there will be a costume making workshop. Start collecting things to bring along, such as boxes and plastic tubs etc, large and small which could be used for costume making. Also, old clothes or pieces of material that could be used. Let your imagination run wild! The basic craft supplies such as scissors, paint, glue etc will be supplied. Everyone is welcome, but please could children be accompanied.
Sorry I’m late
This is a game for two or more people. You take turns to apologise to everyone else, but your apology must be the plot of a film or book that everyone is familiar with. So, you could say, ‘Sorry I’m late but I rubbed a lamp and a genie came out’ or ‘Sorry I’m late but there were all these spotted dogs, at least 100, I’m sure.’ Keep going until someone works it out.
Posters please!
I am now making a regular run around the poster locations in town so if you are having an event and would like me to take yours around at the same time, drop them in to the Town Council Office in the De Valence.
