Pastor Jonathan Fiddy spoke on the words that Jesus uttered before his death on the cross, 'It is finished'. In the original language, it merely says 'finished'. This word meant so much, it referred to the work that Jesus came to do, to deal with the power of sin, and at this point, when Jesus had shed his blood for us he was able to declare the job was done. In Hebrews, we read again and again that the sacrifice Jesus made was once for all, a completed work.
The wonderful news is that Christianity is not based on our works or efforts, but on what Jesus did for us on the cross. With our own works, we can never please God, the Bible describes our best efforts as no more than filthy rags. Yet if we will put our faith in Jesus and His sacrifice we can know God and be forgiven.
So many people when asked if they will go to heaven say 'I hope so' or 'I try to be a good person', however, the only way to heaven is through Jesus who clearly told us he alone was the door to life. If we trust in Him, then we can be absolutely assured of heaven when we die. It is wonderful to know the power of the cross. There Jesus won the victory for us over sin, sickness and death, and proved it by rising from the dead on the third day. Religion is often based on mans efforts to get to God, Christianity is all about God's efforts for us. The only thing we have to do is to actively believe.
Living a good life is a natural response that comes from knowing God. How could we not want to do all we can to be like him, who showed us ultimate love in His sacrifice.
