Locals are being invited to take part in a new project to create a vibrant, colourful mega mosaic at Tenby Church in Wales VC Primary School.

The school is working with ‘Springboard, Learning Pembrokeshire’ to create a mosaic of the school’s logo to cover the main façade of the building.

The project is now well under way with parents and children from the school creating sections of the mosaic at sessions every Wednesday.

The next step is to involve the community in free twilight sessions at the school from 3.30 to 5 pm starting on Wednesday, June 12. Sessions will then take place every Wednesday at the same time through to July 10.

The school’s headteacher John Palmer said: “It’s a project that we’ve had in mind since the opening of the school, when we realised that the large roadside facade was going to be a very stark and plain feature.

“Our involvement with Laura and Shelley from Springboard has given us the opportunity to work with a local artist called Paul Webb.

“Laura supported the school to gain Arts Council for Wales funding that will cover the costs of the project.

“A central part of what we’re hoping to achieve is the involvement of all - children, staff, parents, the congregation of St. Mary’s and members of the wider community.

“Everyone is welcome to contribute to this very large scale artwork that I hope will be a source of pride to the town for years to come.

“Our school logo is unmistakably Tenby through and through, so what better image for passers-by to enjoy!

“We want this fabulous artwork to put a smile on the faces of everyone who travels past our school for many years to come,” he added.

Since Springboard started at Tenby Primary school in the summer of 2017, headteacher Mr. Palmer has observed how the sessions ‘not only allowed parents and children time to learn and share experiences together but that Springboard has also supported a closer connection between school and home’.

Speaking at last week’s meeting of Tenby town council, Clr. Mrs. Tracey Evans a governor at the school told her fellow councillors about the project.

“It’s an ambitious project that we’re involving the community in as a whole and hopefully people will come and join in with helping at these organised sessions. I’m sure the mega mosaic which we’re aiming to finish by September will be quite spectacular,” she said.

“We would love the local community to come along and get involved with what it is a really exciting project,” said Laura Phillips, Springboard co-ordinator.
