Springboard students were thrilled to visit County Hall last week to see the art they had produced on their ‘Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead’ project displayed as part of a temporary exhibition at County Hall.
The course was designed by Springboard to enable families from five primary schools in Pembrokeshire to learn how Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Maths can all be taught and learnt creatively together.
Tenby Church in Wales VC, Mary Immaculate, Gelliswick Church in Wales VC, Johnston Community Primary School and St Mary’s Catholic Primary participated in the project.
In the Maths sessions, families explored the properties of a square, the number of its sides, its measurements, its angles and the ways that square shapes can tessellate and turn from set positions.
In the Technology sessions, the families used the coding platform ‘Scratch’ to create patterns and designs in an efficient, accurate and artistic way.
And during the Art based sessions, each primary school was assigned an artist’s work and a creative process to draw inspiration from and produce art in their own way. Families looked at the art of Evie Hone, Damien Hirst, Josef Albers, Ronald Hunter, Piet Mondrian and Deborah Withey.
Laura Phillips, the co-ordinator for Springboard said: “The Full Steam Ahead project really highlighted the benefits of exploring Maths creatively. Everyone involved should be really proud of what they have achieved!”
Steven Richards-Downes, Deputy Chief Education Officer, said the artworks had added colour to the walls of County Hall and attracted a wide range of interest from staff and elected members.
“The project has enhanced the skills of children and helped them understand the importance of combining sciences and arts as part of their learning. Integrated learning will be a key component of the new curriculum,” he said.
“A special thank you to the Springboard Team and the Big Lottery Fund for enabling this excellent project.”
Springboard is a Learning Pembrokeshire project which runs a wide range of fun, free and exciting courses for adults and families in targeted areas.
