The winners of this year’s Friends of Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Children’s Literary Competition were presented with their prizes at Oriel Y Parc, St Davids, recently.

The competition has been held annually since 2012 to encourage young people to write about the National Park and what makes it special for them. It is open to pupils from all Pembrokeshire schools and also to children visiting the National Park from other parts.

Entries can be in either poetry or prose and prizes are awarded for age ranges Primary (9-11 years) and Secondary (12-14 years).

The competition was judged by Stephen Drinkwater (Chairman FPCNP), Carys Jones and Ann Morris.

The winners are:

Primary Age Group

1st Prize: Polly Lambert, Prendergast Primary School

2nd Prize: Seren Holliday, Roch CP School

3rd Prize: Carys Wood, Stepaside CP School

Highly Commended: Evie Goddard (Roch CP School) and Eshaan Patil (Prendergast Primary School).

Secondary Age Group

1st Prize: Hetty Lort-Phillips, Ysgol y Preseli

2nd Prize: Amelia Harrison, Wem, Shropshire

3rd Prize: Seren Rees, Ysgol y Preseli

Highly Commended: Begw Lois Fussell, Ysgol y Preseli

Judge Carys Jones said: “It is always a pleasure to be part of the judging panel and this year was no exception. We had a wonderful variety of entries featuring both prose and poetry. Thank you to all who competed and also to their parents and teachers for their encouragement. Keep writing!”. Ann Morris added: “The children’s work is always heart-warming as it shows a great love and appreciation of our beautiful county”.

The 2018/2019 Competition is underway and the deadline for entries is 15th June 2019.

This year the competition asks children to write a letter, poem, short story, wildlife journal or booklet in English or Welsh, on the theme of Nature in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. It can also be accompanied by drawings made or photographs taken by the young person. There are cash prizes for the winners. Full details can be found at:
