Pembroke Dock’s catholic school will be ‘reluctantly’ closed by its governing body.

At Pembrokeshire County Council’s full council a report from director of schools Kate Evans-Hughes outlined the issues St Mary’s Catholic School faced.

A proposal from the governing body to discontinue the school was noted by members on Thursday, October 11.

Cabinet member for education Clr David Lloyd said the school had seen a “significant decline in numbers” and had struggled to recruit permanent headteacher.

“The governing body has reluctantly resolved to close the school,” he added.

The school had been supported by St Francis Catholic School in Milford Haven, with a headteacher covering both sites for a period of time.

Clr. Lloyd said it was not a decision for the council to take but the governing body had asked for the assistance of the director with the process.

Governor at the school Clr. Aaron Carey added that there had bee na lot of financial assistance from the council and support from St Francis but the school “could not sustain itself anymore.”

A consultation is planned with the final decision remaining with governors if no objections are made.
