It was a pleasure to welcome back former Greenhill student Andrew Stretton during the final week of the Christmas term, to speak to our Scientists in years 10, 11 and the VI Form. Andrew was an inspiration to our pupils as he presented his pathway through education and his specialised field of Science. Andrew graduated from the University of Bristol in 2013 with a 1st Class Honours degree in Chemistry, before joining Cambridge University to continue his studies, firstly with his Masters in Research, and currently a Phd in Engineering. We would like to thank Andrew for the time he spent with our pupils, it was a pleasure to hear about his successes from St. Florence to Greenhill and beyond. Many thanks Andrew, and all the very best for the exciting future ahead!
Greenhill Rocks!
Ysgol Greenhill’s Expressive Arts Department raised the roof for three consecutive nights during the last week of the Christmas Term with their electrifying production of School of Rock, based upon the West End musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, which was - in turn - adapted from the hit 2003 movie starring Jack Black.
It told the tale of Dewey Finn, a rejected rocker with a dream of stardom, who is dumped by his band, and winds up masquerading as a supply teacher at a rather stuffy private school, where he proceeds to transform the awkward pupils into fully fledged, bathed-in-confidence, rock legends.
The show sent out an enthusiastic message about the life-affirming power of music, wowing the crowd with its sly irreverence and contagious sense of fun. Under the expert direction of its “creatives”, Mrs. Samantha Hughes, Miss Joanna Davies and Mrs. Sarah Rapi, the production was performed with passion and gusto by every last member of its cast, the high energy on stage being effortlessly telegraphed out into the audience, who evidently brought their smiles home with them at the close of the evening.
…and now, in the words of the creatives themselves:
Mrs. Hughes
“It has brought us together, not only as a team of staff, but as a body of like-minded adults and children, all with the same vision and goal: for Greenhill’s production of ‘School of Rock’ to be the best it could possibly be. And what more could we want from our children than to show determination, commitment, team-work and success? These are skills that cannot be taught in the classroom, but will stick with the cast involved for life.”
Miss Davies
“I am extremely proud of each and every one of our cast and crew. Although it’s been a rollercoaster, they have remained committed and loyal throughout. Giving up their lunchtimes, after school, weekends and Half Term to be part of a show that some had never even heard of. It has been a pleasure to work with such a fantastic group of young adults. I’ll miss working with them all!”
Mrs. Rapi
“I’ve enjoyed every minute of working with these fantastic people - students and staff! Well done everyone!
“Rock the mics, it’s time to play!”
