Hospitality learners developed a real taste for seafood during an interactive session at Pembrokeshire College with the Welsh Seafood Cluster and Menter a Busnes.

Welsh seafood is renowned for its freshness and quality as most comes from inshore day boats and small-scale aquaculture farmers.  With a fleet of over 400 licensed fishing vessels employing over 1200 fishermen, Wales’s seafood industry is an important part of the coastal economy.

In a session funded through the ‘Coastal Capacity Challenge Fund' in Welsh Government, learners took part in the preparation methods required to serve seafood at the highest quality which included Cod, Oysters, Crab, Lobster, Gurnard, Skate Wing and Mackerel.

Curriculum Area Manager Mel Sharrad-Hughes joined in on the session: “We were delighted to host the Seafood Cluster event. It was a fantastic opportunity for our learners and staff to understand more about a wide range of seafood and to be able to prepare it themselves.

“It was great to see them so engaged,” she added. Thank you for bringing this to Pembrokeshire College, we hope to see you again soon.”

Learners thoroughly enjoyed the session and even sampled the shellfish.

Hospitality learner Justin Henderson said: “I and my peers really enjoyed the session. It was fascinating to see the different types of seafood that can be served on a plate and the art involved when preparing seafood for fine dining experiences.”

Learners and hospitality staff are looking forward to future collaborations with the Welsh Seafood Cluster and Menter a Busnes and exploring more seafood dishes.
