Golden Grove Community School in Pembroke has been presented with two awards for their work on environmental issues.

The school has been awarded their third Eco Schools Green Flag for their continued hard work in the Eco Schools Programme.

The school's first Eco Committee was set up in 2001. Since then, there have been several strong committees made up of children, staff, governors and parents working together to promote environmental issues throughout the school and out into the local community.

The school has also received the Bronze Sustainable Schools Award.

Some of the projects the children have been involved in are litter picking on Freshwater East beach with the Darwin Science Centre, developing a vegetable garden, and making a plastic bottle greenhouse with the Greenlinks Project.

They have also developed local woodland, taken part in a Safe Routes to School initiative and cultural diversity projects, and learnt about ways to reduce waste.

Cabinet member for education Clr. Huw George, who presented the school with their awards, praised the pupils and staff for their achievement.

"These awards are recognition of their impressive and consistent work on a wide range of environmental topics over many years," he said.
