Sir,
I was delighted to read in last Friday’s Observer that the Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane, obviously has great sympathy for the increasing number of people with mobility problems who find it impossible to access the harbour area during the pedestrianisation scheme now the ‘park and ride’ no longer operates from Butts Field.
When this wonderful service was first withdrawn I did have a letter on this page expressing my dismay and disappointment at no longer being able to visit the most iconic part of our town. But, as a resident, I admit I have 10 other months to visit my favourite spot - provided one of the three disabled parking bays is vacant.
But it is the elderly, infirm visitors for whom I feel so sorry. They live with pain and limited mobility and no doubt look forward to a holiday here, only to find, on their arrival, that they can only gaze down on the harbour, surely the heart of our lovely town, from a distance. Sadly, one can understand if they decide to plan future holidays in more disabled friendly resorts so that they will not feel that their advancing years and health problems make them feel outcasts.
Meanwhile, I look forward, God willing, to being able to get down to the harbour - even on cold and windy days to enjoy soaking up the incomparable atmosphere of Tenby’s heart and, of course, warming up with a nice pot of tea in the Dennis Cafe while enjoying the sea view!
Barbara Stredder,
Tenby.
