Pembroke Dock Harlequins RFC recently took possession of a defibrillator from Dr. Gareth Roberts who is a volunteer with the Welsh Hearts Charity.
A sum of £1,000 was raised during the annual Quins Carnival and the carnival committee led by Michael Scourfield offered to donate the money towards the purchase of the defibrillator.
Welsh Hearts are a charity working towards the prevention and management of heart disease. The defibrillator is an important apparatus used to shock the heart back into a natural rhythm when somebody has suffered a heart attack. The chances of somebody surviving after a heart attack are greatly increased if a defibrillator is available and can be used.
Members of the charity gave a session at the Quins ground on basic life-saving techniques and demonstrated how the defibrillator worked. Hopefully the apparatus will never have to be used, but in the event that it does, during rugby matches, training or functions down at the Pembroke Dock Harlequins, there is now a defibrillator present to be used by those who are trained.
