Pembrokeshire County Council have responded to concerns over claims that ‘broken promises’ were made with regards to frustration expressed by boat users over the lack of dredging of Tenby harbour.

Tenby Harbour Users Association (THUA) recently met with members of Tenby town council to state that a ‘firm commitment’ to dredge Tenby harbour was needed as boat users refuted county council claims that a solution has been found.

At a recent meeting of the Harbour Users Association there was a focus on recent reports that quoted local county councillor Michael Williams as saying a dredging plan had been agreed by PCC.

THUA?chairman Angus Dunlop stated that what had been agreed was the levelling out of the sand “in a mitigate the current position” – the third time this has been carried out this year.

He feared that the public and Town Council were being misled about the plan stating that he “totally rejected a claim of a ‘dredging plan’, short or long term.”

A plan to improve the area around the harbour was welcomed but a call to ensure a plan for dredging after the holiday season was required.

The harbour was last dredged three years ago.

A spokesperson for Pembrokeshire County Council said: “Temporary works have been undertaken to improve the access to the harbour whilst a dredging permit is applied for through Natural Resources Wales (NRW).

“A dredging permit application is a lengthy process, normally four months determination period in addition to the time to undertake the required sampling to support the application.

“It is planned for this work to be undertaken in the Early 2019, dependent on the approval of the dreading permit by NRW.”

It was also revealed last week that the harbourmaster had been releaved of any responsibility for the management of Tenby Harbour operations until further notice, with all queries are to be put to acting harbourmaster Chris Salisbury or harbours manager Sarah Edwards, with additional support being brought in to support the acting harbourmaster over the busy summer period.

“An internal procedure is underway relating to this matter. No further comment will be made,” said a spokesperson for PCC.
