Funding options to help protect Tenby’s historic town and castle walls are set to be explored.

Speaking at Tuesday night’s meeting of the town council, Clr. Mrs. Caroline Thomas who recently called for a spruce-up of the Castle Hill area, once again thanked gardeners for uncovering the resort’s long hidden ‘magic wishing seat’ in that area, but also wondered if any funding could be uncovered to help preserve the resort’s historic walls, under an ancient landmarks or heritage schemes.

She told Tenby’s ‘liaison link officer’ Richard Brown, who is also Pembrokeshire County Council’s head of environment and civil contingencies, that the walls were ‘deteriorating rapidly’ and had suffered with weed damage.

“It is important to our town that we keep the walls in pristine condition. I appreciate that PCC don’t have much money at the moment, but I’m wondering if funds can be sourced from other pots and organisations such as CADW,” she said.

Mr. Brown explained that Dr Steven Jones, Director of Development at PCC had recently established a ‘buildings at risk’ working group, which could possibly help bring their skills set to such issues, and that he would raise the matter this week, to see if an appropriate member would join Clr. Mrs. Thomas for a ‘walk around’ areas such as Castle Hill in Tenby.

Clr. Tony Brown asked if proceeds collected from the second home council tax, earmarked for worthwhile local projects, could be used for such work.

“Maybe we could put a bid in, as its part of the town,” he said.

The town clerk Andrew Davies and the Deputy Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown pointed out that the process of undertaking a feasibility study towards a proposed project to illuminate the town walls and enhance the South Parade area was still being worked on with PCC officers, before submitting a bid for funding.

Mr. Davies said he was due to meet with the authority’s regeneration manager, Sinead Henehan next week to discuss matters in Tenby.

He also said that local AMs Joyce Watson and Neil Hamilton had responded to Clr. Mrs. Thomas’ query about historic walls funding who had pointed out that many grant schemes for such matters, had closed for this year, but that they would keep any eye on the matter and take it to Welsh Government tourism minister Lord Elis-Thomas.
