A proposal to build a new skate park in Tenby could be considered if the current facility cannot be extended, councillors heard this week.
The ‘Jubilee Play and Skate Park Association’ committee was formed last year to move forward with plans to extend the skateboard park overlooking the South Beach, with somewhere in the region of £130,000 funding required to enhance and extend the facility.
However, speaking at Tuesday night’s meeting of the town council, Deputy Mayor, Mrs. Christine Brown told her fellow members that they were struggling to find a contractor to redevelop the current skate park area.
“At a meeting of the Skate Park committee, the suggestion came forward to try and develop a new facility, possibly on a pitch that has been a bone of contention in the past, the Battery Gardens,” she explained.
“Perhaps we can ask Pembrokeshire County Council tentatively about this land, as eight years ago they said no, but times have moved on!
“Since the sensory garden there was smashed up, it seems that the site has become just a barren piece of land, with a couple of trees in it. If we can’t get anyone to develop the current skate park, then this may well be the only space we can,” she continued.
Two years ago members of the town council were presented with five different concept plans for an enhancement of Battery Gardens, mooted by the county council, that would possibly see a ‘Gorsedd’ style stone circle placed in the middle of the site.
PCC had proposed that the project could all be achievable within a budget of between £20,000 and £25,000, if match funded by the town council, but the plans left councillors and the ‘Regeneration Team’ with mixed feelings, and the project hasn’t materialised since.
Clr. Mrs. Brown told her colleagues that on the fundraising side for the skate park, things were going well, with the Round Table and Lions continuing to be a big help, and the kids arranging some events for over the summer.
“Our town crier Jim also recently completed a half-marathon where he ran with a skateboard on his back and raised over £1,000 for the cause.
“Anybody, such as parents of any of the children that use the skate park facility are very welcome to join the committee - we’d be grateful for the help and input,” added Clr. Mrs. Brown.
