WITH almost a full house this month, Carew WI president Edith introduced speaker, Chartered Environmentalist Richard Lupo, whose passion for the ‘Science of Happiness’ stems from his Tenby schooling.

Richard explained that as a pupil at Greenhill School in Tenby, he was enthused to care about the environment. His further education and work life led him into researching not only the practical factors that affect our daily lives but how the environment impacts on us and affects our contentment daily.

Countries have been measuring contentment since the end of the Second World War, he explained, but it’s only recently that the environmental factors have been included. As a consultant on this subject, his advice and input is regularly sought. His recent book Happiness by Numbers is a step by step guide which individuals and groups alike can use to “measure and manage their wellbeing” in order to “make a positive impact on the world”. Communities addressing local environmental factors will lead to worldwide benefits.

Richard’s engaging, open, enthusiastic and passionate presentation was warmly received and Erica gave a vote of thanks. He finished by saying that studies show that women are more content than men. He enjoyed a cup of tea and, of course, cake, and settled down to a book signing session.

The meeting proper, began with a rousing rendition of Jerusalem, followed by the reading and sanctioning of the minutes of September’s meeting. Thoughts then turned to the PFWI County Letter and next months AGM.

The president reminded members of their own branch November meeting when elections will take place followed by the traditional lunch. This meeting will begin at 1pm.

With birthdays celebrated and trips arranged, together with confirmation of the Christmas lunch venue and date, members finalised arrangements for the Penfro group Carol service on December 4, before heading out into the autumn sunshine and home.
