THE latest Jazz Lunch at Tenby’s Clarence House Hotel on Sunday, September 28 was treated to a collection of superb tunes from The Dick Hamer Quartet featuring the vocals of Jenny Jones.
The concert collated a wide range of jazz but centred on popular numbers from the 1930s ‘hit parade’ including Harold Arlen’s Paper Moon, Gerald Marks and Seymour Simons’ All of Me, Billie Holliday’s God Bless The Child and Johnny Burke’s Pennies from Heaven.
Interspersed were a number of more recent tunes, such as Sonny Burke’s Black Coffee from the 1940s and Toots Thielemans’ Bluesette from the 1960s.
With Dick Hamer on saxophones, Dave Jones on keys, John Rodge on double bass and Paul Smith on drums a perfect backdrop was set for Jenny who proved equally respectful and creative with her so smooth vocals. A treat, indeed, for the jazzers.
The next Jazz Lunches, at The Clarence, include the jazz funk of The Groucho Club on October 19, the piano wizardry of the Ross Hicks Trio on November 9 and a final concert, before the year end, from the Dom Norcross Quartet with Elaina Hoss on December 14.
