The latest Tenby Jazz lunch, at The Clarence House Hotel on Sunday, October 19, featured the funky jazz of The Groucho Club.
The five piece band played numbers composed by the likes of Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock, all with a due reverence to the jazz standards many of the famous tunes have become. The band included Wynn Phillips on guitar, Chris Ryan on saxophones, Andrew Harries on keyboard, Alan Vaughan on bass guitar and Paul Smith on drums.
The first half started with Chris Ryan explaining his 22nd century looking instrument, an Aerophone, a modern digital wind instrument; the second half started with a temporary replacement drummer, Tenby resident Trish Livingstone’s son, Andrew Flűctiger, visiting from Geneva, absolutely proving his percussive competence.
With another fine meal from The Clarence, the audience left with senses replete and to sunshine, Their arrival had been in gale force wind and rain. Amazing this jazz thing.
The next jazz lunch - the last of the year - offers a rare opportunity to see the Ross Hicks Trio on Sunday, November 9. The young band, formed around Ross’s exuberant piano skills, is fast gaining a wide, glowing reputation.
Start time is about midday, finish time around 3pm, for a chilled experience of jazz complemented by a delightful lunch, all designed to put you in a state of mellow, ready to take on the next week’s challenges.
