“From Darkness to Light”: these are the words of Richard Davies, reflecting on his memories and feelings as an eight-year-old boy in 1945.
Richard was one of three young brothers who survived falling bombs, Anderson Shelters, his father away and his mother nervously knitting throughout air-raids, taped windows and black out screens - he was taken to the Mall on VE Day.
He spoke movingly of his awe at the sheer joy, relief and vibrancy of the day – a riot of red, white and blue – after six long years of dark, grey – the sights and sounds imprinted on his memory from this young age, forever.
We listened, members of Quaynotes Choir, as we practised songs of the era in preparation for our performance at the Carew Cheriton Control Tower Group which was on Thursday, May 8 as part of the VE Day Celebrations.
What event it turned out to be. A riot of colour and joyful, respectful celebration – from the Act of Remembrance led by Rev’d Hannah Karpaty to some fast-moving, upbeat songs by Quaynotes – When you’re Smiling; Daisy, Daisy; Puttin’ on the Ritz and Good Night Sweetheart all featured – to the delight of the audience who joined in, singing with gusto.

Carew Cheriton Control Tower was the perfect setting as the evening ended with the lighting of a Beacon – evoking the feelings and memories of Darkness to Light so emotionally and brilliantly described by Richard.—JW
