A TINY photograph has opened up another chapter in the charming story of ‘Charlie’, the 100-year-old ventriloquist’s doll, who has sparked much interest since he went on display at Pembroke Dock Heritage Centre this year.
When ‘Charlie’ came out of retirement and went on display as the Heritage Centre opened for the 2026 season on March 30, it was a return to old haunts for Charlie as he had performed in the building - the former Royal Dockyard Chapel - with his then owner, Ernie James. Over many years their double act was very well known on the Pembrokeshire variety circuit.
Local entertainer Ernie also had his own small bus company called Pioneer Buses.

The tiny photo, given to Paul Elliott - now ‘Charlie’s’ owner - by Brian Pratt of Pembroke Dock, reveals that ‘Charlie’ had a friend. The picture shows the two male dolls with Ernie James and one of his company’s buses.
Paul said: “This is a fascinating discovery and I would love to know what the other doll was called. We are aware that Ernie probably had another doll called ‘Daisy May’ but now it looks like there was a family of dolls!”
As the mystery of ‘Charlie’ and friends deepens he calmly continues to survey the world from his display case at the Heritage Centre, where he will remain on view for the coming weeks.
