WHAT a turnout! Saundersfoot Wombles were absolutely thrilled with the enthusiasm and hard work shown by everyone who joined them at ECoast's Spring Clean Cymru for Keep Wales Tidy on Sunday, March 22.
At 7am, three early-bird heroes picked up 27kg from Ridgeway, Fan Road, Pentlepoir junction, down past St Issell’s Church and Church terrace: a really enjoyable walk and talk team effort.
At 9am, nine legends picked up 25kg around the village including 4.6kg from the car park opposite the arcade, and 2.5kg from around the Multi-Use Games Area. They stopped counting cigarette butts at 100!
At 11.30, 31 warriors undertook a beach clean from Glen Beach to Coppet Sands. the Wombles were joined by locals - regulars and first timers, visitors having a change of litter-picking scene, holidaymakers keen to help out and the brilliant Saundersfoot Rotary who brought their trademark energy and enthusiasm dressed in blue. Together, they picked up 19.6kg.
And the result? A tidy 71.9kg of litter was picked up during the day!
Named after the fictional furry characters created by Elisabeth Beresford, Saundersfoot Wombles is a dedicated community volunteer group in Pembrokeshire focused on keeping beaches and streets clean.
The Wombles convey their grateful thanks to Mel at Saundersfoot Sailing Club for providing refreshments after the first two cleans.
Bizarre finds of the day include:
A star-shaped wheeled base - possibly from an office chair: “Answers on a postcard as to why it would be on the roadside!” Julie Davies quipped on the Wombles’ Facebook page, and an unidentified skull!
Julie said: “investigations are ongoing, but rumours are rife that we may have found a Womble. Orinoco, is that you?!”
To her fellow volunteers, she added: “A massive Diolch to every single one of you. You are the reason our communities shine!”
