NEW Hedges WI president Ann Maggs opened the March meeting, welcoming speaker Mavis Alton, whose talk, ‘Charity Shop Snippets’ gave an entertaining insight into the behind-the-scenes work that takes place.

Having listed the daily work routine, Mavis described some donations that had proved to be upsetting, and outlined the high running costs of a charity shop. However, on the positive side, she had the satisfaction of meeting some lovely members of the public and feeling she was contributing to her community.

Mavis’ fascinating talk ended with a quiz, where WI members assessed a mixed bundle of items and tried to match them to their destinations. These ranged from designer items to those only fit for recycling. Scores were low, so perhaps a little more practice is needed!

WI business included arrangements for the New Hedges WI lunch at the Jolly Sailor near Burton in April, and reports from three subgroups. The Craft Group distributed hand made Easter cards to every member.

The talk scheduled for the April meeting is on ‘Blood Bikes’. New Hedges WI will meet on Thursday, April 9 from 2pm to 4pm at New Hedges Village Hall. All are very welcome.
