As part of Foster Wales Carmarthenshire’s Fostering in Llanelli campaign, they’re continuing to tackle common misconceptions that often prevent potential foster carers from enquiring. One common concern potential foster carers have is whether their lifestyle is flexible enough.

Many people assume that fostering requires being at home full time, having lots of spare time, or making major changes to their day-to-day lives. But that isn’t always the case. Foster Wales Carmarthenshire supports a wide range of foster carers, some work full time, others work part time, and many balance other responsibilities alongside fostering.

There are different types of fostering to suit different lifestyles, from short-term and long-term fostering to more specialist types of fostering. Some foster carers provide short breaks, while others support children and young people on a more regular basis. Every role helps to make sure children and young people in foster care in Carmarthenshire feel safe and supported.

Whether someone is employed or not, single or in a relationship, what matters most is being able to provide a safe, stable and caring home. Foster Wales Carmarthenshire works closely with new foster carers to help them find the type of fostering that suits their lifestyle best.

Dafydd, Carmarthenshire foster carer, said:

“I work full time and live alone, fostering still fits into my life.”

Cllr. Jane Tremlett, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Services and Children and Families, said:

“Our foster carers work closely with our social work teams to create supportive environments where children and young people feel safe. There’s no single type of foster carer, we welcome people from all walks of life who want to make a difference in Carmarthenshire.”
