Councillor Linda Asman has been elected as Pembroke Town Council’s mayor for the year 2020/21.

Ms. Asman who was first elected as a Pembroke Town Councillor in 2008 was proposed by Clr. Aidan Brinn and seconded by Clr. Rose Blackburn, during the town council’s meeting on February 13.

During his proposal speech, Clr. Brinn praised Clr. Asman for her track record for obtaining funding for projects such as the Henry VIII statue.

He also added that Clr. Asman would bring prosperity to Pembroke and make the town even stronger.

During her acceptance speech, Clr. Asman said: “Pembroke is an amazing place, I’ve made it my mission to promote heritage.

“I believe Pembroke’s future lies in exploiting its vast heritage, I’ve raised a great deal of money for the town projects.”

She added that she would decline a traditional mayor-making ceremony in favour of an evening celebrating the town’s volunteers, including Clr. Ruth Blackburn, stepping down after 30 years as town crier.

Clr. Asman also said that she found the debate of the disgraced ex-mayor Dai Boswell “disturbing” but was proud to be part of the council.

Outgoing mayor, Clr. Gareth Jones is set to replace Clr. Blackburn’s as the town’s crier.

“I promise I will be pro-active throughout the year, raising money for charities,” said Clr. Jones.

Fighting for the chance to be elected, Deputy Mayor were Clr. Dennis Evans and Clr. Jon Nutting.

Clr. Evans was proposed by Clr. Blackburn, and Clr. Nutting by Clr. Melanie Phillips.

Addressing members after being elected as Deputy Mayor, Clr. Nutting said he was going to be “sandwiched between an extremely capable next mayor and followed by someone just as capable.”

He also mentioned that he wanted Clr. Asman’s time as Mayor to be as smooth as possible.
