The choral might of one of Wales’s most celebrated male choir’s returns to St. David’s Cathedral this month for their annual Valero sponsored ‘Summer Concert’.
Since 1987 Côr Meibion De Cymru - The South Wales Male Choir has gathered its choristers from all over the region - plus a number of exiles from across the Severn - to perform in their National Shrine.
This year, following a break in 2014 when the choir was on ‘foreign fields,’ their music programme will include pieces such as the appropriate ‘Angonaf Angel’ (Guardian Angel) and the ‘Hallelujah Chorus.’ Many will doubtless be reminded of the 101-year-old sacrifices and miraculous escapes of the men of the BEF in France and Belgium at the outbreak of WW1.
Joining the choir will be two of the principalities (and Pembrokeshire’s) rapidly rising stars. Soprano Jessica Robinson, who hails from Crymych, will share the stage with blue riband winner Trystan Llyr Griffiths in a programme that will see them also perform together. The acclaimed young Clynderwen tenor, voted as Wales’ most promising singers, like his consort, is a graduate of the RWCMD, Cardiff, and is greatly looking forward to being back west
Under the direction of CMDC’s Elaine Robins, with piano accompaniment of Sian Davies and with Terence Gilmore-James on the Willis organ, the ‘Summer Concert’ on Saturday, August 15, looks to be one to savour - just like all those before.
Tickets are available from St. David’s Bookshop, tel. 01437 720480, or at the cathedral south door on the night. Visit www.southwalesmalechoir.co.uk for more information.
