For the past few weeks what was a patch of rough ground near Pembroke Castle has been a riot of colour.

The transformation is the work of four volunteers supported by Pembrokeshire County Council.

During the winter the quartet - all Pembroke Town Councillors –spent several hours of their own time clearing an overgrown area of ground overlooked by Pembroke Castle.

In April, after the work was complete, County Council horticulturalist Marc Wright and his colleague Simon Harris added some top soil and sowed the patch with some leftover seeds containing over twenty varieties of wildflowers.

They then watered the seeds regularly until they burst into bloom, providing a colourful scene with the castle providing an imposing backdrop.

“On behalf of the town, I can’t thank Marc and Simon enough for their work,” said one of the four volunteers, Town Councillor Melanie Phillips.

“They do a lot of extra work for Pembroke and deserve recognition. Everyone have loved the final result although I must admit the digging into the hard clay soil on a cold, winter’s morning was strenuous work.”

Her three fellow volunteers who also prepared the ground were: Councillors Jon Nutting, Adrian Cooke and Chris Doyle.
